Our Church

St Mary the Virgin, Black Bourton

St Mary’s Church is nearly a thousand years old, set in a village of 102 houses. We have two services each month – on the second Sunday Holy Communion at 10.30am and on the fourth Sunday Evensong at 6pm.

As there is no village hall, the church is the main meeting place in the village, and in recent years successful Flower Festivals and Music Festivals have drawn good support from the village and beyond. We have now improved the facilities in the church, including better heating, a kitchen and an accessible toilet! The process of achieving this started with a village-wide consultation in 2021 and culminated in the completion of the project in 2024. The church now hosts a regular coffee morning and Garden Club and Film Club meetings.

From the end of 2022 we became part of the Benefice of Brize Norton with Carterton and Black Bourton, with the Team Ministry led by Rev Barry Hanson.

Supporting the Team Ministry in the parish is the Parochial Church Council (PCC) made up of the following officers:

  • Secretary Simon Thomas
  • Deanery synod representative Simon Thomas
  • Treasurer  Lawrence Clarke
  • Church warden vacant

Lay representative:

  • Richard Betteridge (Assistant treasurer, Safe-guarding officer and Electoral roll officer)
