If you are surprised to see me writing here then join the club – I am frantically looking for some interesting dates in July to talk about. Summer months do tend to be quiet in church which is probably a good thing as it allows us to enjoy holidays and trips to see the family, go to BBQ’s and generally recharge our batteries. During this hot spell I have been sitting outside in the evening watching the dozens of swifts which swoop and dive around my garden. It’s difficult to believe that they spend most of their lives on the wing, including flying to Africa and back each year only touching earth to nest and raise chicks for a short while.
So back to events in July and I am pleased to let you know that there will be a thanksgiving service for Bill Taylor in the church at 2 p.m. on Saturday 11th July. Although Bill was not a churchgoer, he spent many hours each week in the churchyard keeping the grass mown and the path edges straight simply because he wanted to contribute to village life. Moving here from Oxford when he married Tessa nearly 25 years ago, he absolutely loved the village and the strong sense of connection he felt with those who lived here, many of whom became firm friends. Those of you who knew Bill will always remember his generosity and hospitality – a party in the garden was right up his street and everyone was made to feel so welcome without exception. We hope to have more in the newsletter next month about Bill and his remarkable life.
Bill’s wishes were to have a private cremation which took place last month but Tessa extends a welcome to all of you who knew and loved Bill to join in the celebration of his life. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
For those who didn’t know Bill, there’s an event at St John’s Carterton also on the 11th July starting at 1:00 pm. It is hosted by Rev Barry. Hymns & Pimms is an afternoon of entertainment and fellowship. Many kinds of drinks will be on offer, followed by selecting and singing of hymns.
On Monday 6th July at 2:30 pm, Rev Ron Lloyd’s funeral will be at St Mary’s Bampton. Do read Jeremy’s eulogy.
